atelier du cuivre

During the 12th century, King Henry I of England and Duke of Normandy rewarded his Knights for their courage and valor in the Crusades by granting them the small commune of Villedieu. These Knights possessed exceptional skills in metalwork, honed through years of crafting their own weapons and armor. Their expertise in this trade became indispensable during the aftermath of the Crusades when the construction of numerous churches took place across France. The local artisans found themselves occupied with the production of bells for church towers, as well as crafting intricate candle holders and drinking goblets.

Over the course of a century, Villedieu’s reputation as a hub for skilled coppersmiths and fine metalwork became firmly established. The town’s name evolved from Villedieu to Villedieu-les-Poêles (or “Villedieu the Pans”) due to its association with the production of copper pans. The inhabitants of Villedieu came to be known as les Sourdins (“the deaf”) due to the constant clamor of steel and copper being hammered.

With the advent of modern industrialization and changes in consumer preferences, the number of traditional copper workshops in Villedieu has dwindled. However, the town’s pride in its craftsmanship endures. It is within this context that we encounter Atelier du Cuivre, one of the oldest surviving brands in France.

For over two centuries, tinned copper has been highly sought after for its excellent heat conductivity, particularly in kitchenware. Atelier du Cuivre specializes in crafting exquisite saucepans and skillets, typically made of 3 to 4 mm-thick copper with a tin-plated interior and iron handles. This meticulous process necessitates a specific set of skills and extensive experience, all carried out by hand.
