Antique Painting – Chapel in Provence
This small oil on board, painted with the knife technique has a very 1930’s feel and atmosphere. The chapel stands at the tip of the village, surrounded by a low wall, with large agave succulent plants , and tall straight cypress. The provençal sunlight adds a touch of gold to the end of day scene.
On the back of the painting, the artist wrote ‘Chapelle de Bormes’. This tells us that the painting shows the Chapelle St Francois de Paule, in the town of Bormes les Mimosas, close to the Mediterranean in the south of France.
